Grohe Driveway & Pavers: The San Jose Owner’s Guide
If you’re replacing a Grohe driveway drain, channel grate, or paver-adjacent drainage component in San Jose, you’re looking at an installed cost of roughly $295 to $1,180 for most residential replacements, depending on the channel length, grate material, and whether the surrounding pavers need to be pulled and reset. We stock common Grohe-compatible drainage channels and grates on our trucks, so many San Jose repairs can be handled in a single visit. Most homeowners discover the part has failed the hard way: a grate that’s cracked under a car tire, a channel that’s sunk below the paver line, or water pooling against the garage slab after rain instead of running to the street.
Here’s the honest picture: Grohe doesn’t manufacture pavers themselves. What we’re really talking about is the intersection of two things: a Grohe drainage system (channel drains, grates, and their mounting hardware) that sits within a paver driveway or paver patio, and the paver work around it. When one fails, the other usually needs attention too. That’s the part most people don’t know until the repair quote lands.
Which Grohe Models This Applies To

Grohe’s drainage lineup for residential driveways and paver surfaces includes the Grohe Rapid SL channel drain series, the Grohe Lineare shower and floor drain ranges (sometimes adapted for kitchen and utility areas adjacent to paver patios), and a handful of smaller utility drains used in outdoor living spaces. For driveway and paver applications specifically, what matters most is two things: the grate class and the channel width.
The compatibility gotcha we see in San Jose all the time: driveway channels need a load-class grate rated for vehicle traffic (Class B 125 or Class C 250 under EN 1433), and many homeowners accidentally buy a pedestrian-rated grate because it looks identical on a screen. Then the first SUV rolls over it and the grate cracks. We’ve pulled more than a few broken grates out of driveways in Almaden and Evergreen that should have been rated for carloads but weren’t.
How to identify your part without guessing: the channel width is the number that matters most. Grohe channels for residential driveways typically run 70mm, 100mm, or 130mm internal width. Measure the inside of the channel, not the outside of the grate. OEM Grohe grates run about $70 to $180 per linear section, while quality aftermarket equivalents from drainage houses run $40 to $95. We’ll install either, but we’ll tell you up front whether the aftermarket option meets the load rating your driveway needs.

Signs Your Grohe Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Water pools against the garage slab after rain instead of draining. The most common cause is a channel drain that’s settled or sagged below the surrounding pavers, so water never reaches the grate. In San Jose’s clay-heavy soils, seasonal expansion and contraction moves these channels more than people expect.
- The grate rocks or rattles when you step or drive on it. This usually means the mounting frame has pulled loose from the channel body, or the concrete haunch around the channel has cracked. Left alone, the grate edges start chipping the surrounding pavers.
- Visible cracks across the grate surface, especially in the middle. Almost always a load-rating problem: the grate wasn’t rated for vehicle traffic, or it’s been in service for 15+ years and UV exposure plus thermal cycling finally did it in. San Jose sun is hard on polymer components.
- The channel line is visibly lower than the pavers on one side. This points to a substrate failure below the channel: the base under the pavers has settled unevenly. Replacing just the channel won’t fix it. The low side needs to be lifted, rebased, and recompacted.
- You can hear water running under the pavers but nothing comes out at the drain. This is a cracked channel body, usually a hairline split. The water is bypassing the drain entirely and washing out the base material, which is how you end up with those sunken paver lines six months later.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

In San Jose, a straightforward Grohe channel drain replacement with a new OEM or quality aftermarket grate runs $295 to $825 installed for most residential driveway runs of 3 to 8 linear feet. That number includes removing the old channel, prepping the base, setting the new channel to grade, securing it with concrete haunching, and resetting any pavers we had to pull to get at it.
If the surrounding paver section has settled and needs to be lifted, rebased, and relayed, you’re into the $825 to $2,125 range, which overlaps with our standard paver repair pricing. What drives the number up: longer channel runs, deeper excavation if the base is washed out, and whether the pavers are a discontinued style that needs careful salvage work. What drives it down: short runs, healthy base, grates that drop straight into an existing frame.
Every quote is written before we start. The number you sign off on is the number on the invoice. No change orders because we “found something” mid-dig, unless you ask us to expand the scope. And the work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if the repair fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
There are a couple of things you can safely check yourself before calling anyone. First, lift the grate (it usually just lifts out) and look inside the channel. If you see standing water or silt packed in, clean it out with a hose and a small trowel. A surprising number of San Jose “drain failures” are just channels choked with silt and leaf debris. Second, check whether the grate sits flush with the pavers. If it’s rocking but the channel body is solid, you may only need a replacement grate, which is a 15-minute swap.
Where DIY goes wrong: any job that involves pulling pavers, digging out a channel, or re-setting grade. The base compaction under a paver driveway is load-bearing. Get it wrong and you’ll have a two-inch depression in six months. Also, if the channel is cracked below ground, patching it from above just hides the problem while it keeps washing out your base. Give me the real problem and I’ll give you the real number. Call (669) 274-2362 and we’ll take a look, tell you what’s actually broken, and write you a price before a shovel goes in the ground.
FAQs

A properly installed Grohe channel drain with a vehicle-rated grate typically lasts 15 to 25 years in San Jose, but the grate itself often needs replacing at the 10 to 15 year mark due to UV exposure and traffic wear. If the drain was installed with a pedestrian-rated grate in a driveway, expect the grate to fail within 3 to 5 years. Call (669) 274-2362 for a free inspection and written quote.
Hairline cracks in the top portion of a channel body can sometimes be sealed with a high-bond polymer patch, but any crack that allows water to escape the channel means the base is actively eroding, and repair becomes a temporary measure. In our experience, a cracked driveway channel in San Jose is usually a replacement job, not a patch job. Call (669) 274-2362 and we’ll tell you which one you’ve got.
Most standalone channel drain replacements take 4 to 6 hours on site, including base prep, setting, and paver reset, and the area can be walked on immediately after. If the pavers need to be lifted and rebased across a larger section, expect a full day. We’ll give you a defined arrival window and a hard finish estimate in writing before work starts. Call (669) 274-2362 to schedule.
We stock common Grohe-compatible 70mm and 100mm channel sections and matching vehicle-rated grates on our trucks, as well as aftermarket options that meet the same load ratings. For 130mm channels or unusual lengths, we’ll source the part and confirm the price before we schedule the work. Call (669) 274-2362 and we’ll check your size.
