Boral Driveway & Pavers: The San Jose Owner’s Guide
If your Boral driveway, paver, or walkway section has cracked, shifted, or started to look worn, we can source the matching replacement and install it for you. Typical Boral paver and driveway repair work in San Jose runs from $295 for spot sealing or paver resetting up to $16,520 for a full driveway replacement, depending on how much square footage is involved and whether the base layer underneath is still sound. Most San Jose homeowners call us after a winter storm or a vehicle strike leaves them with a cracked paver, a sunken section, or a surface that no longer drains the way it used to.
We stock a working range of Boral-compatible pavers and edging products on our trucks, and for less common colors or lines we order direct from trade suppliers so the match is right the first time. Penhallow Remodeling San Jose is an independent remodeling and installation company, not a Boral dealer or manufacturer rep, so the advice we give is based on what holds up on actual San Jose driveways, not a catalog.
Which Boral Models This Applies To

Boral’s driveway and paver line in the US market centers on concrete segmental pavers, permeable pavers, and the associated edge restraints and joint sand. The most common Boral systems we work on in San Jose are the Boral Clay Paver line, the Boral Stone pavers (including the larger format 24″ × 24″ units used on commercial and high-end residential driveways), and Boral Permeable Pavers, which are increasingly specified by Bay Area municipalities for stormwater compliance on new driveway pours.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners don’t know: Boral pavers are not interchangeable across lines, even when they look close in a photo. A paver from the Clay line and a paver from the Stone line may both be labeled “charcoal,” but they won’t be the same thickness, the same surface texture, or the same joint width when installed. We identify the correct replacement by measuring the paver thickness (typically 60mm or 80mm for residential driveways, with 80mm required for vehicle loads), reading the lot code stamped on the bottom edge when it’s still legible, and matching the color blend against a daylight sample, not an indoor one. If the exact Boral lot is discontinued, we source the closest current equivalent and blend it across the repaired section so the patch doesn’t shout at you from the curb.
For most San Jose driveways, we recommend staying with genuine Boral product rather than a generic aftermarket concrete paver. The difference is in dimensional tolerance: Boral pavers are pressed to tighter size variance, which means cleaner joints and a flatter finished surface. When we do use an aftermarket equivalent on older discontinued colors, we tell you before we install it and show you a physical sample next to your existing driveway.

Signs Your Boral Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Spider cracking across individual pavers or slab sections. This almost always traces back to a base failure underneath, not a bad paver. In San Jose’s clay-heavy soils, the base layer expands and contracts with moisture, and over time a thin or poorly compacted base telegraphs cracks straight up through the Boral surface.
- Pavers that rock underfoot or make a hollow sound when tapped. That hollow sound means the paver has lost contact with the bedding sand. Water has washed the fines out, or a downspout has been dumping in one spot for years. Left alone, the paver will crack under vehicle load.
- Joint sand washing out after every rain. Some joint sand loss is normal, but if you see channels forming between pavers after a San Jose wet season, water is moving through the base and carrying the sand with it. This is the earliest and cheapest fix we see, and the one most homeowners miss until a paver sinks.
- A sunken or raised section more than half an inch out of plane. Tree roots, a leaking irrigation line, or a failed edge restraint can all cause this. A raised edge is also a trip hazard and a liability issue, which means it’s worth fixing now rather than after someone catches a toe on it.
- Fading, scaling, or a white powdery film on the paver surface. Boral pavers sealed with the wrong product or never sealed at all will show surface wear faster in San Jose’s sunny, dry climate. Efflorescence, that white powder, is usually cosmetic, but heavy scaling means the surface has been compromised and the paver is past its serviceable life.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For Boral driveway and paver work in San Jose, here are the installed price ranges based on what we actually see on the job:
- Paver reset or spot repair (5 – 20 pavers): $295 – $825 depending on access and whether new base material is required
- Paver driveway sealing and joint sand replacement: $295 – $825 for a typical two-car driveway
- Paver driveway installation (new or full replacement): $8,260 – $21,240 for a standard San Jose driveway footprint
- Paver patio installation: $4,130 – $12,980 depending on size, base work, and drainage needs
What moves the number within those ranges is simple: how much square footage you have, whether the existing base is reusable or needs to be pulled and re-compacted, whether the site drains properly, and whether we’re matching a discontinued color that requires special ordering. Every quote is a written price before any work starts. The number on the quote is the number on the invoice, and if the repaired area fails within our 365-day window, we come back and make it right at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
Pavers are one of the few driveway materials where a careful homeowner can do real, lasting work themselves. Spot-replacing a cracked paver, topping up joint sand, and cleaning the surface are all reasonable DIY jobs if you can identify your paver correctly and you’re willing to pack the base properly. The honest caveat: if you set a paver on a base that’s already failed, you’ll be doing the same job again in twelve months.
Where DIY goes wrong is when the failure is under the surface. If your pavers are sinking, rocking, or cracking in a pattern across multiple units, you’re looking at base failure, and fixing base failure means pulling the affected section, re-grading, re-compacting, and resetting the pavers to line and level. That’s heavy, dusty work that needs a plate compactor and a string line, and it’s the most common job we correct after a homeowner takes a weekend swing at it. There’s no dangerous high-tension component to a paver repair, so we’re not telling you to stay away for safety. We’re telling you to stay away because a bad base repair costs more to redo than the first fix would have cost done right.
If you’re not sure whether the problem is surface or base, call (669) 274-2362. We’ll take a look, tell you what’s actually happening, and hand you a written price. You’re not obligated to use us for the work.
FAQs

With a properly compacted base and correct installation, Boral concrete pavers last 25 to 40 years on San Jose driveways, and clay pavers can last even longer. The surface may need re-sealing every 3 to 5 years in our dry, sunny climate to keep its color and resist moisture intrusion. The base is the real limiting factor: a good paver on a bad base fails early, and a mediocre paver on a great base will still be there in 30 years. Call (669) 274-2362 if you want us to assess the base, not just the surface.
A chipped or cracked paver is replaced, not repaired. We pop the damaged paver out, inspect the bedding sand underneath, add or re-compact material as needed, and set a matching replacement in place. If the same area fails again within our 365-day guarantee, we return at no charge and fix it right the second time.
A spot paver replacement takes 1 to 2 hours on site. A full driveway base rebuild and paver reset takes 2 to 5 days depending on square footage and the amount of base material that has to come out and go back in. We give you a defined arrival window before we start, and we hold to it.
We stock common Boral paver colors and sizes on our trucks for spot repairs, and we order less common lines and discontinued colors directly from our trade suppliers. We handle the sourcing and the matching, so you never have to chase down a color in San Jose yourself. We also install compatible lines from KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone where they’re the right fit for the project, but for driveway pavers, Boral is the workhorse we see most.
