CWS Kitchen Remodeling: The San Jose Owner’s Guide

If you have a CWS kitchen and are staring at delaminated cabinet doors, failed drawer glides, or countertop seams that have opened up, we can match the finish, the profile, and the hardware spec so the replacement doesn’t look like a patch job. CWS (Custom Wood Specialties) cabinetry is built around specific door profiles, box construction, and hinge boring patterns, and matching those correctly is the difference between a repair that disappears and one that announces itself every time you open a drawer. Installed pricing for CWS-specific kitchen remodeling work in San Jose runs $16,520 – $53,100 depending on whether you’re replacing a section of cabinets or reworking the whole kitchen, and we stock most common CWS-compatible hinge plates, drawer slides, and touch-up finishes on the service truck. Most owners discover the failure the way you just did: a drawer that won’t stay closed, a door that hangs crooked no matter what you do, or a finish that’s worn through at the finger pull. Call (669) 274-2362 and we’ll tell you over the phone whether it’s a $200 hardware swap or part of a larger kitchen remodel scope.

Which CWS Models This Applies To

CWS built cabinets across a few distinct lines over their production years, and the compatibility gotcha is this: the hinge boring pattern changed between their earlier face-frame boxes and the later frameless line. If you have a face-frame cabinet (the cabinet box has a solid wood frame visible around the door opening), you need a hinge plate with a 1/2-inch overlay and a cruciform mounting pattern. If you have a frameless box (the door edge sits flush with the cabinet edge), you need a full-overlay hinge with a 35mm cup boring. Getting this wrong means the door sits proud of the cabinet by an eighth of an inch and never closes flush. The easiest way to identify your line is to pull one drawer and look for a stamped lot code on the inside of the drawer box: CWS printed a four-digit date code followed by a door profile number on boxes built after 2006. For the door profile itself, take a photo of the inside corner of a door where the rail meets the stile and send it to us. Trevor Nash can identify most CWS profiles from a photo, which saves you a service call. On the OEM-vs-aftermarket question for CWS specifically: CWS is no longer manufacturing as an independent line, so “OEM” hardware is mostly new-old-stock. Quality aftermarket equivalents from Blum and Salice match the original spec and often outlast the original hardware, because they use the same boring pattern but better internal damping. We use Blum soft-close slides and hinges on almost every CWS repair for that reason.

Signs Your CWS Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • A drawer that sticks, sags, or falls off its tracks. CWS used epoxy-coated steel drawer slides on most mid-2000s boxes, and the ball bearings inside those slides wear flat after 10 – 15 years of daily use. The drawer will still pull, but it’ll bind halfway and then jump, and one day the slide separates entirely.
  • A door that drifts open or won’t stay at 90 degrees. The hinge spring on the original CWS self-closing hinge loses tension over time, especially in a kitchen with evaporative cooling or higher humidity. Replacing the hinge is a 10-minute job; ignoring it means the door eventually warps from hanging at an angle.
  • Finish worn through at the finger pull or lower rail. CWS used a catalyzed lacquer on many of their oak and maple lines, and that finish wears thin at the pull edge after 8 – 12 years. Once the lacquer is gone, the bare wood underneath absorbs cooking oil and water and turns dark; at that point you’re into refinishing, not touch-up.
  • Countertop seams spreading at the miter. If you have a CWS kitchen with a post-form laminate top, the front edge is a glued-on profile that separates from the substrate in hot, dry San Jose summers. The edge lifts first at the inside corner, and once it catches a sleeve or a dish towel, it peels the whole way back.
  • A sink base that’s swollen or soft at the bottom. The sink base was the most common failure point on CWS boxes we see in San Jose, because the original plumbing gasket dries out and weeps. The particleboard box absorbs that moisture and swells, and the shelf sags. You’ll smell it before you see it: a musty, sour note every time you open the door.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled kitchen with a waterfall island and wood cabinets

For CWS-specific kitchen work, the installed range in San Jose is $16,520 – $53,100. The spread is driven by three things: how much of the kitchen you’re touching, which cabinet line you’re matching, and what countertop material is going back on. A partial cabinet refresh with new doors, hardware, and a laminate top lands at the lower end. A full CWS teardown and rework with KraftMaid or Wellborn cabinets and a Cambria quartz top lands at the upper end. Here’s the line-item structure so you can see what’s in the number:

  • Cabinet installation: $4,720 – $15,340
  • Countertop installation: $2,360 – $7,670
  • Backsplash installation: $945 – $2,950
  • Kitchen island installation: $3,540 – $11,800

Every line is written before work starts. No verbal ballpark, no “we’ll figure it out as we go.” The number on day one is the number on the invoice. And every job carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the work fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s not a marketing line; it’s in writing on every project we do in San Jose.

DIY or Call Us?

For hardware replacement on a CWS cabinet, a capable homeowner can swap a hinge or a drawer slide if you match the boring pattern exactly. The risk is ordering the wrong overlay by 3mm and then fighting the door alignment for an afternoon; we sell the hardware over the counter at our shop, so you can bring the old hinge in and match it in person. What you should not do yourself is remove a CWS countertop that’s mechanically fastened to the cabinet boxes. Post-form tops are glued and screwed, and forcing a seam apart pulls the substrate and splinters the edge; you’ll ruin the top and possibly the cabinet with it. If the failure is a sink base that’s swelled from a water leak, the repair is a box replacement, and that’s saw work inside a finished kitchen. Call us at (669) 274-2362 before you start cutting. One honest conversation will save you a trip to urgent care or a $600 cabinet.
