Barrette Windows & Doors: The San Jose Owner’s Guide
If you have a Barrette window or door with a failed part, we can match it, order it, and install it. Barrette parts we supply typically run $140 – $680 installed depending on the component and your specific model. Most commonly that’s a balance assembly, roller set, hinge set, or weatherstripping pack, and we can usually have the part in hand within 2 – 5 business days, with installation done in a single visit. The way owners usually find out is a window that suddenly drops when you open it, or a sliding door that sounds like a box of gravel.
We’re an independent San Jose remodeling and repair company, not a Barrette dealer. We work on Barrette products because enough San Jose homes have them, and because the parts are still very much available if you know which series you’re looking at.
Which Barrette Models This Applies To

Barrette manufactured vinyl windows and sliding glass doors under several series names, and the parts do not cross over freely. The common families we see in San Jose are the Barrette Classic, Barrette Professional, and Barrette Premium vinyl lines, plus the older Builder Series on 1980s and 1990s homes. A balance assembly from a Classic will not seat correctly in a Premium, even if the visible dimensions look close, because the shoe profile and spring rate are different.
The fastest way to identify what you have is the sticker on the top or bottom edge of the sash. If the sticker is gone or sun-faded (in San Jose, it usually is), you can pull the sash out and read the stamp on the metal pivot shoe or the channel. That stamp, even a two- or three-digit code, tells us more than a photo of the window from ten feet away ever will. We also match roller sets by the wheel diameter and the mounting style, because Barrette used three different roller housings across the sliding patio door lines over the years. For most Barrette parts we use OEM where it’s still available, and a quality aftermarket equivalent only when the original is discontinued, which is more common than we’d like on window balances and door handlesets.

Signs Your Barrette Windows & Doors Is Failing
- Window drops or slams shut when you open it. One or both balance springs have snapped or lost tension. A single broken balance overloads the other one, so the remaining one usually gives out within weeks.
- Sliding door grinds, scrapes, or needs body weight to move. The rollers are worn flat or the bearings have seized. When you keep forcing it, the roller housing digs into the steel track, and now you’re replacing the track too.
- Drafts around the edge of a closed window or door. The weatherstripping has compressed or the corner blocks have cracked. Vinyl shrinks with age, and in San Jose’s dry summers plus cool wet winters, that shrink is accelerated.
- Lock or latch doesn’t catch or catches only half way. The keeper is out of alignment from settled framing, or the internal lock gear has stripped. On Barrette doors this is often an easy parts swap, not a full door replacement.
- Condensation or fog between the panes. The insulated glass seal has failed. For Barrette units without a glass warranty term still in force, the practical fix is a new insulated glass pack made to your exact measurements.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For San Jose Barrette owners, window balance replacement runs roughly $140 – $320 per window. Sliding door roller replacement is typically $180 – $480 for a full set, and a new pair of hinged door hinges runs $120 – $280. A full sliding door handle and lockset replacement lands around $180 – $380, and new weatherstripping for a full door is usually $95 – $220. Where Window Replacement is the smarter fix, the full project in San Jose typically runs $5,310 – $17,700, but for a single failed part you’re almost always well under $700.
Our price is the full installed price: the part, the labor, the trip, and the warranty on the work. We write the number on the estimate, and that’s the number on the invoice. You get a written guarantee on every parts replacement, and if it fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, in writing, on every job.
DIY or Call Us?
Replacing window balances and door rollers on a Barrette unit is not a safety problem the way a garage door spring is, but it is a compatibility and calibration problem. The balance has to match the sash weight within a pound, or the window won’t stay where you put it. The roller has to sit at the correct height or the door binds against the jamb. You can safely check the sticker, look for wear on the track, and wipe out the lower track on a sliding door with a dry cloth. We’d leave spring and roller work to us.
Trevor Nash has been matching window and door parts for over two decades, including a run of San Jose kitchen and bath remodels in Willow Glen where the original Barrette windows needed new balances before the interior work could even start. Give me the real problem and I’ll give you the real number. Call (669) 274-2362 and describe the symptom. We’ll price the likely part right then, and confirm it on site before any work starts.
FAQs

In San Jose with our dry heat and coastal temperature swings, Barrette vinyl window balances typically last 12 – 18 years before the spring loses measurable tension or snaps. If your home was built in the 1990s or early 2000s and you have original Barrette windows, you’re right at the failure window now. Call (669) 274-2362 and we’ll match the balance to your sash before we arrive.
No. The rollers on Barrette sliding doors are sealed bearing units, and once the bearing is worn or the wheel is flat, there’s nothing inside to service. Replace them as a set, never just the one that failed, because the other roller has run the same number of cycles. We can usually supply and install a full set in one visit.
Most single-part replacements, like a window balance or a sliding door roller set, take 30 – 60 minutes once the correct part is in hand. We order the part first, schedule the install after it arrives, and confirm the exact model before ordering. The total timeline from call to finished repair is usually under a week.
We keep the highest-fail items in common sizes on our San Jose trucks: window balances for Classic and Professional series, sliding door roller sets, and common handlesets. If the part isn’t on the truck, we order it direct or through a Barrette-compatible production supplier, and we’ll give you a written price and lead time before any order is placed. Call (669) 274-2362 to check your model against what’s in stock.
