Ameristar Fence Installation: The San Jose Owner’s Guide

Ameristar fence installation in San Jose typically runs $4,130 to $10,620 for a full panel-and-post system, including removal of the old section when needed. We stock Ameristar-compatible posts, panels, brackets, and hardware on our trucks, so most repairs and section replacements go in the same visit. The way most San Jose homeowners find us is simple: a windstorm or a mower bump exposes a wobbly post, a gate starts dragging, or a panel pops loose from its bracket, and suddenly the fence that looked fine last month needs real attention before it gets worse.

Ameristar builds steel fence systems differently than the thin box-store panels you see sagging around town. Their Montage and Impasse lines use heavier-gauge steel and a powder-coated finish that stands up to coastal moisture and Valley heat. But nothing lasts forever, and when a section fails, matching the new piece to the existing line matters more than most people realize. That’s where we come in. We’re an independent contractor in San Jose, not affiliated with Ameristar, which means we can be straight with you about what’s worth replacing and what isn’t.

Which Ameristar Models This Applies To

An open living space after a whole-home remodel

Ameristar runs three primary residential lines: Montage, Impasse, and Echelon. Montage is the classic ornamental steel fence, and it’s the one we see most often in San Jose’s Willow Glen, Almaden, and Berryessa neighborhoods. Impasse is the heavier commercial-grade line with thicker pickets and rails. Echelon is the newest series, with a cleaner face and hidden fasteners. Within each line, panel widths run 6 to 8 feet, and posts come in 2-inch, 2.5-inch, and 3-inch profiles depending on height and wind load.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners hit: Ameristar panels are punched for line-specific rail brackets, and a Montage bracket will not seat correctly on an Impasse rail. If you measure center-to-center post spacing and grab the manufacturer sticker off a post cap, you’ll usually find what you need. But if that sticker is faded or painted over, the picket profile tells the story. We keep all three bracket styles and a range of post sizes on hand when we come out, because guessing wrong on a $14 bracket can turn a half-hour job into a two-trip headache.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: Ameristar’s factory powder coat is good, but we’ve seen aftermarket panels from local steel yards that match the geometry and come in $30 to $60 cheaper per panel. For most San Jose homes, we recommend OEM for the face-facing panels and aftermarket only for backyard runs where a subtle color shift won’t be visible. The finish on Ameristar panels fades slightly over years of California sun, and a brand-new OEM panel next to a five-year-old panel still shows a difference. We’ll tell you that before we order anything.

Signs Your Ameristar Fence Installation Is Failing

  • Post lean at the base. The concrete footer has cracked or eroded. In San Jose’s clay-heavy soils, winter rains saturate the ground, and summer dryness shrinks it, working posts loose over three to five years. A leaning post strains the rail brackets and will eventually pull a whole section out of line.
  • Gate dragging or latching wrong. The hinge post has shifted, or the gate frame itself has racked. Ameristar gates are heavy, and once the post moves even an inch, the latch and hinges fight each other. You’ll see wear on the latch pin first.
  • Panel rattling in the wind. A bracket has loosened or a rail has separated from a picket. Ameristar panels are welded, not screwed, so rattling usually means a bracket bolt backed out or the post cap let water in and rust started at the connection.
  • Rust blooms at the post base or under the post cap. The powder coat has been breached, often by weed trimmer strikes at ground level. Left alone, it creeps upward. San Jose’s dry summers slow it, but the winter months push it hard.
  • A section that moves when you push it. This means the post footer has failed or the rail connection is compromised. On a wind-exposed fence line, that section is one big storm away from leaning into your neighbor’s yard.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled living room with built-in shelves around the fireplace

For Ameristar fence installation work in San Jose, you’re looking at $4,130 to $10,620 depending on how much fence is being replaced, whether we’re pulling old concrete footers, and which Ameristar line you’re matching. A single damaged post with footer removal and re-set runs on the lower end. A 60-foot run of new Montage panels with fresh posts, hardware, and disposal of the old section lands in the middle of that range. Full Echelon replacement with gates pushes toward the top.

Every quote we hand over is a written number before we start, because that’s how we’ve worked since we joined the Kingswell family of companies. The price covers the panels, posts, brackets, concrete, labor, haul-away, and a written 365-Day Done Right Promise. If something fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. No service call fee, no re-inspection fee, no fine print. That applies to every Ameristar panel, post, and bracket we install in San Jose.

DIY or Call Us?

A wobbly bracket bolt you can reach with a socket wrench is fair game to check and tighten yourself. So is clearing dirt and grass away from a post base so water doesn’t pool there. Those are the two things that cause most early failures, and ten minutes with a wrench saves you a service call. What we’d caution against is re-setting a post or replacing a panel on your own. The panels weigh more than people expect, the concrete footer work is unforgiving, and getting a post plumb and square while concrete sets is the difference between a fence that stays straight and one that heaves in two years.

If you’re in San Jose and you’d rather have it done once and done right, call (669) 274-2362. Trevor Nash will put a written number in front of you before anything gets ordered.
