Techo-Bloc Bathroom Remodeling: The San Jose Owner’s Guide

If you’ve got a Techo-Bloc bathroom feature that’s failing, we stock the parts and install them in San Jose for $10,620 – $33,040 depending on the scope of the remodel. Most owners discover the problem the same way: a shower pan that’s started pooling water, a wall system that’s shifted, or a Techo-Bloc surface that’s cracked after years of settling. In San Jose’s clay-heavy soil, we see movement more than anything else – the ground shifts, the waterproofing layer underneath takes the stress, and the visible surface is the last thing to show it.

We’re not affiliated with Techo-Bloc. We’re an independent remodeling contractor in San Jose, but we work with their bathroom systems regularly and know how they’re built, what fails first, and what a proper replacement actually involves. Trevor Nash runs the crew, and he’ll tell you straight: most Techo-Bloc bathroom failures aren’t the block itself. They’re what’s underneath it.

Which Techo-Bloc Models This Applies To

A powder room with botanical wallpaper and a stone sink

Techo-Bloc’s bathroom and wet-area lines are designed around modular wall systems, shower bases, and architectural wall units. The two compatibility points you need to check before ordering anything: the series name stamped on the back of any loose unit, and the joint width. Techo-Bloc’s wall series use either a tight-fit (roughly 1/8 inch) or a wider 3/8 inch joint, and mixing them causes exactly the kind of lippage and water intrusion people call us about.

OEM Techo-Bloc units are made to tighter tolerances than most aftermarket equivalents, but the difference matters less in a bathroom than in a freeze-thaw exterior wall. For interior wet areas, a quality aftermarket unit from a manufacturer that matches Techo-Bloc’s face dimensions and color blend is usually fine. We don’t carry every colorway on the truck, but we keep the common San Jose sellers in stock – the grays and warm earth tones that dominate Willow Glen and Cambrian remodels. If you’re matching an existing wall, take a photo in natural light and measure one full unit including the joint. That’s the fastest way to get a real answer.

Signs Your Techo-Bloc Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

  • Water pooling at the shower base edges. The mortar bed underneath has settled or the waterproof membrane has delaminated. The block looks fine; the substrate (the moisture-resistant layer beneath it) is what’s compromised.
  • Cracks running through multiple units in a line. That’s movement, not a bad unit. In San Jose, it’s usually clay soil expansion or a slab that was never properly prepared. Replacing one unit won’t fix it.
  • Efflorescence or white mineral staining. Water is getting behind the surface and pushing salts through. The waterproofing has failed somewhere above the stain line.
  • Grout that won’t stay in the joints. If you’ve re-grouted once and it’s crumbling again within a year, the wall system is flexing. Grout is the symptom, not the problem.
  • A Techo-Bloc unit that’s loosened or shifted out of plane. One proud tile edge is usually a bond failure from an improperly mixed thinset. It starts small and gets worse fast.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A wood double vanity with two mirrors after a bathroom remodel

In San Jose, a Techo-Bloc bathroom remodel runs $10,620 – $33,040. The spread comes down to three things: square footage, whether we’re pulling the existing waterproofing down to studs, and the Techo-Bloc series you’re matching. A shower-only refresh with basic wall units stays near the bottom. A full bathroom with a Techo-Bloc feature wall, new pan, new substrate, and fixtures climbs toward $33,000.

Every job includes the written price before we start, removal and disposal of the failed material, new cement board substrate where needed, waterproofing, installation, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the work fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. No service call, no re-inspection fee. That’s the Kingswell Way, and it’s been the standard since 2004.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do the detective work: check for loose units, take photos of the series stamp, measure the joint width, and mark where water pools. That information saves us a trip and gets you a firmer number faster. What you shouldn’t do is pull units off a wet-area wall yourself. Once you break the waterproofing layer, water gets behind the entire system and a $2,000 repair becomes a $20,000 gut.

Techo-Bloc wet-area work is not like hanging drywall. The substrate, the slope, the membrane, the weep system – any one of them wrong and you’re redoing it in eighteen months. If you’re in San Jose and you want the real number on your specific job, call (669) 274-2362. We’ll put it in writing before anything gets touched.
