Boxabl Kitchen Remodeling: The San Jose Owner’s Guide
Boxabl kitchen remodeling in San Jose typically runs $16,520 to $53,100 installed, depending on whether you’re replacing cabinet fronts and counters or gutting the entire galley down to the steel frame. Most Boxabl owners call us after living with the factory kitchen for a year or two and realizing the standard laminate surfaces and compact cabinet layout aren’t holding up to daily use. The most common entry point is a failing sink cabinet base or a countertop seam that has started separating at the fold line, which is unique to how Boxabl panels come together.
We are an independent remodeling contractor in San Jose. We are not affiliated with Boxabl, but we have worked on enough of these units to know exactly what the factory kitchen includes, what fails first, and what needs to change to make the space genuinely work for full-time living.
Which Boxabl Models This Applies To

The Boxabl Casita ships with a single kitchen configuration: a compact galley along one wall with an L-shaped counter run, a stainless sink, a two-burner electric cooktop, and a compact refrigerator bay. The cabinets are lightweight MDF with a laminate wrap, sized to fit the unit’s folded shipping envelope, which means the cabinet boxes are shallower than standard residential cabinets by about 2 inches. That 2-inch difference matters more than most people expect. Standard big-box cabinets will not slide into the factory alcoves without modifying the surrounding wall returns, and that modification is where we see DIY jobs go sideways.
If you are replacing cabinet doors only, check the hinge spacing first. Boxabl’s factory doors use a European-style cup hinge with a 35mm bore, same as most aftermarket brands, but the mounting plate is set for a shallow 18mm panel rather than the standard 19mm found on most KraftMaid and Wellborn doors. That single millimeter causes binding at the corner stile. We carry 18mm shim plates on the truck for exactly this reason.
For countertops, the Casita’s factory surface is a thin laminate over particle board, cut to roughly 72 inches along the galley run and 48 inches on the return. If you’re upgrading to solid surface or engineered stone from Cambria or Silestone, the added weight requires reinforcing the cabinet bases below, because the factory boxes are not framed for a 300-pound slab.

Signs Your Boxabl Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Sink cabinet base swelling or staining. The factory cabinet under the sink has a raw particle board floor with no moisture barrier. Once water sits after a minor leak, the board swells and the cabinet door starts to hang crooked. The fix is a rigid plywood replacement base with a waterproof liner, not a new door.
- Countertop seam lifting along the fold line. The Casita’s counter sections join where the wall panel hinges once folded flat. Over time, expansion and contraction along that seam causes the laminate to pull up. If you can catch a fingernail on the seam, moisture is already getting in.
- Cabinet doors that no longer close flush. The lightweight MDF frames flex with humidity cycles. San Jose’s dry summers and damp winters are rough on laminated MDF, which absorbs and releases moisture unevenly. Doors that closed fine in August bind by February.
- Drawer slides grinding or sticking. The factory slides are lightweight roller units rated for minimal cycles. In daily use, the rollers wear flat within a couple of years and the drawers start to sag. Replacement with full-extension ball-bearing slides is the single biggest functional upgrade you can make for under $500.
- Cooktop surround delaminating from steam. The laminate around the electric cooktop takes constant heat and moisture with no vent hood in the factory layout. Over time the adhesive layer softens and the surface bubbles. This is cosmetic until it isn’t; once the particle board core gets wet, the substrate crumbles.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A full Boxabl kitchen remodel in San Jose lands between $16,520 and $53,100. On the lower end, you are replacing cabinet doors and drawer fronts, installing a new countertop, swapping the sink and faucet, and adding a proper vent hood. On the upper end, you are pulling every cabinet box, reframing the wall cavities for full-depth cabinets, upgrading the electrical for a full-size range, and installing Cambria or Silestone counters with a heavier support system.
Here is what those numbers look like broken out:
- Cabinet installation (new boxes, standard depth): $4,720 – $15,340
- Countertop installation (laminate to stone): $2,360 – $7,670
- Backsplash installation: $945 – $2,950
- Kitchen island or peninsula addition: $3,540 – $11,800
- Small kitchen refresh (doors, counters, fixtures): $10,620 – $23,600
Every quote includes the written price before work starts, the labor, the materials, disposal of the old cabinets and counters, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If something fails within the first year, we return and fix it at no charge. That includes a free second visit if the repair fails again. The number we hand you before demo day is the number on the invoice. No change orders, no surprise line items.

Some Boxabl kitchen work is safe to take on yourself. Swapping cabinet hardware, replacing a faucet, installing a new sink strainer, or peeling and re-caulking a backsplash edge are all within reach for a careful homeowner. The factory plumbing is standard PEX with accessible shutoffs under the sink, so even a faucet swap doesn’t require opening walls.
What I would not recommend doing yourself is anything that involves modifying the wall panels or cabinet boxes. The Casita’s interior paneling is structural in ways that are not obvious. Cutting into a panel to gain cabinet depth can compromise the wall assembly, and pulling factory cabinet boxes without understanding how they are anchored to the steel frame leaves you with a wavy wall and a cabinet run that won’t stay square. Trevor Nash has spent the better part of two decades running remodeling jobs across the South Bay, including some kitchen and bath gut-jobs in San Jose’s Willow Glen neighborhood, and the lesson repeats every time: give me the real problem and I’ll give you the real number. Call (669) 274-2362 and describe what you are seeing. We will tell you over the phone whether it is a DIY weekend project or a call-out.
FAQs

Plan on 5 to 8 years for the factory cabinets and counters under daily full-time use in San Jose’s climate. The laminate surfaces and MDF frames simply are not built for the humidity swings and daily wear that a conventional home kitchen handles. If the unit is a vacation rental or used seasonally, you may stretch that to a decade, but full-time living accelerates the wear at the sink cabinet and cooktop surround specifically.
In many cases, yes. A swollen sink base can be replaced without touching the surrounding cabinets. Door and drawer fronts can be swapped. Countertops can be re-laminated or replaced with a new surface. The threshold where repair stops making sense is when three or more cabinet boxes are compromised, or the wall panel behind the cooktop has taken moisture. At that point, the labor to patch exceeds the cost of a proper replacement. Call (669) 274-2362 and we will give you an honest read before you spend anything.
A countertop and door swap typically takes 2 to 3 days from tear-out to final walkthrough. A full cabinet replacement with electrical upgrades and stone counters runs 7 to 10 working days. We give you a defined arrival window in writing before the project starts, and we show up in that window. You will know exactly which days we are in your unit and what happens each day.
We stock the most common shim plates, slide upgrades, and moisture barrier materials for Boxabl-specific cabinet work, and we have a local San Jose supplier for short-depth cabinet boxes that match the Casita’s 2-inch shallower profile. What we do not do is sell loose parts over the counter. This is an installed service, which means the part comes with the labor to install it correctly and the written guarantee behind it. That is the only way we can stand behind the work.
