James Hardie Fence Installation: The San Jose Owner’s Guide

James Hardie fence installation in San Jose typically runs $4,130 – $10,620 for a full fence line, and Penhallow Remodeling San Jose stocks the panels, trim, and fasteners needed for most Hardie jobs. You’ll usually notice the problem before you name it: a panel that’s started to warp at the bottom edge, a run of Hardie trim that’s pulled loose from the post, or a gate that drags because the post settled. We’ll match your existing Hardie profile, give you a written price before the first board comes off, and stand behind the work for a full year.

Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

A whole-home remodel with the living, dining and kitchen areas opened up

James Hardie manufactures fiber cement siding and trim products, not a dedicated fence system, so most San Jose “Hardie fences” are built from HardiePlank lap siding, HardiePanel vertical siding, or HardieTrim boards mounted on a pressure-treated or steel post frame. The compatibility question is really about profile and texture: HardiePlank comes in 4-inch, 5-inch, and 6-inch exposures with either smooth or cedar-textured faces, and if your existing fence uses a 5-inch smooth lap, we need to match that profile exactly or the patch will stand out. HardiePanel comes in 4×8 and 4×10 sheets with the same texture options, and it’s what we see most often on San Jose privacy fences built in the last eight to ten years.

One thing to know: James Hardie’s warranty covers the product, but only when it’s installed to their published fastening and clearance specs. That means painted edges, the right gap off grade, and stainless or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners. A lot of the fences we’re called out to repair failed early because somebody used drywall screws and set the bottom course right in the dirt. We can identify what you’ve got from a photo and a measurement in about five minutes.

Signs Your James Hardie Fence Installation Is Failing

  • Bottom-edge swelling or peeling. Hardie board wicks moisture when the bottom edge sits within two inches of soil or sprinkler spray. You’ll see the paint bubble first, then the board starts to soften. In San Jose’s wet winters, this moves fast once it starts.
  • Screws pulling through the board face. Incorrect fasteners or overdriven screws strip the fiber cement and the panel sags off the rail. The board isn’t the problem; the installation was.
  • Trim boards separating at the post line. HardieTrim expands and contracts with temperature swings, and San Jose sees enough hot-to-cold cycling that poorly gapped trim will pop its fasteners within a few years.
  • Gate binding or dragging. The post has settled or the gate frame has racked, and the Hardie panel mounted to it now rubs at the latch side. Forcing it bends the hinges and cracks the panel corners.
  • Uniform cracks at panel edges. Fiber cement handles compression well but cracks when a panel is under tension from a leaning post or a gate that torques the frame. A vertical crack running from a corner is usually structural movement behind the board.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled family room with new windows and a window seat

A James Hardie fence installation in San Jose runs $4,130 – $10,620 for a typical residential fence line. The spread comes down to three things: lineal footage, whether the posts and rails can be reused, and the Hardie profile you need to match. A straight run of 50 feet with clean posts might land near the low end; a 100-foot fence with failing posts, a gate rebuild, and HardiePanel sheets to match your existing privacy run will push toward the top.

Every quote is a written number, not a range. That number includes the Hardie material, the correct stainless or coated fasteners, post and rail repair or replacement as needed, paint-ready installation, haul-away of the old material, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If something fails inside that year, we come back and fix it at no charge. No service call, no re-inspection fee.

DIY or Call Us?

Fiber cement fencing is not the place to learn rough carpentry. The material is heavy, the fastening schedule matters, and getting the ground clearance wrong means the bottom of your new fence starts failing the day you finish it. Cutting Hardie also produces silica dust, which requires a proper respirator, not a bandana. We’d say a homeowner can safely handle one thing: taking photos of the failed section and measuring your panel’s exposure and texture, so we can price and stage the job before we arrive. If you want to check the posts yourself, grab the top of the post and push; movement means it’s a post job, not a board job, and that’s a repair we’d rather handle properly.

Trevor Nash has been the one taking those phone calls for years now, and he’ll tell you the same thing on the phone he’ll tell you standing in your backyard: give me the real problem and I’ll give you the real number. Call (669) 274-2362 to schedule a free estimate.
