James Hardie Driveway & Pavers: The San Jose Owner’s Guide

We stock and install James Hardie-compatible driveway and paver components throughout San Jose, with typical installed pricing running $5,310 – $21,240 depending on whether you’re replacing a section or the full driveway. Most owners can get a written quote the same day they call, and we carry the common James Hardie paver profiles and edge restraints on our trucks. The usual discovery goes like this: a paver shifts under a car tire, a corner cracks after a wet winter, or the sand joint between pavers starts washing out toward the street. You notice it, you poke at it, and then you’re here wondering whether to patch it or replace the whole run.

Here’s the thing about James Hardie driveway products in San Jose specifically: they’re engineered for fiber cement performance, not as standalone structural pavers. What that means in practice matters a lot. James Hardie makes siding, trim, and backer board. Their paver and driveway compatibility usually refers to HardieBacker used as an underlayment substrate beneath thin pavers, or HardiePanel used as a decorative driveway accent wall. If someone sold you “James Hardie pavers” as the surface itself, that’s a mislabel. We see this confusion in San Jose at least once a month, usually after a homeowner tries to match a product they saw online to what’s actually under their feet.

Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

A home office with a built-in desk and shelves

If your driveway or paver area involves James Hardie material, you’re almost certainly dealing with one of three things: HardieBacker cement board as a tile or thin-paver substrate, HardiePanel as a vertical accent or retaining surface along the driveway edge, or HardieTrim boards used as paver edging forms. HardieBacker comes in 1/4-inch and 1/2-inch thicknesses, 3×5 sheets. The 1/4-inch version is for floors and countertops over a solid subfloor. The 1/2-inch version is for walls and areas needing more rigidity. If your driveway pavers sit over a wood-framed section, like an elevated walkway or a driveway bridge over a crawlspace, the 1/2-inch HardieBacker is the correct substrate. The 1/4-inch sheet will flex under vehicle weight and crack the pavers above it.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: James Hardie doesn’t make driveway pavers. So when we talk about “James Hardie-compatible parts” for a driveway or paver project in San Jose, we mean the substrate and edging components that work with whatever paver product sits on top, whether that’s Belgard, Unilock, or a standard concrete paver from a San Jose supply yard. For the substrate, we always spec actual HardieBacker cement board rather than a generic cement board substitute. The difference is in the fiber cement density and the moisture resistance, which matters in San Jose’s wet-winter, dry-summer cycle. Cheaper boards swell and crumble along paver edges after two or three seasons. HardieBacker doesn’t. For the pavers themselves, we source from Belgard and Unilock, both of which we stock parts for alongside KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone on the interior side of our business.

Signs Your James Hardie Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Pavers rock or shift underfoot or under tire. The sand bed or base beneath has eroded, usually from water getting past the edge. In San Jose’s clay-heavy soil, winter saturation loosens the base and the pavers lose support. You’ll feel a clunk when you step on the edge of one paver.
  • Sand joints keep washing out toward the driveway apron. Polymeric sand should lock the joints. If it keeps disappearing after rain, the edge restraint has failed or the slope is pushing water through the joints instead of toward the drain. This is a base-drainage problem, not a paver problem.
  • Hairline cracks appear along one line of pavers. That line usually traces the edge of a HardieBacker seam below. If the substrate sheets weren’t gapped and taped properly, the pavers above mirror that seam. It’s the most common tell of a rushed substrate install.
  • White chalky residue blooms on paver edges near the house. Efflorescence from water wicking through the cement board and carrying minerals up into the paver face. It looks like salt deposits. It usually means the drainage plane behind the substrate is saturated.
  • A low spot forms where the driveway meets the garage slab. The base under that transition has compacted unevenly. You’ll see standing water there after rain. Left alone, the pavers start cracking along the low point within a year or two.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

An open living space after a whole-home remodel

In San Jose, driveway paver work falls into a few distinct price bands. Paver driveway installation runs $8,260 – $21,240 for a standard two-car driveway. Concrete driveway installation runs $5,310 – $14,160. Asphalt paving is $4,130 – $10,620. Driveway replacement, which includes demolition and haul-off of the old surface, runs $5,900 – $16,520. If you’re just doing a paver repair or a section replacement, it typically falls between $1,200 and $4,800 depending on how much base rebuilding the spot needs. Driveway sealing runs $295 – $825 and is the one job on this list where speed matters for the sealant cure, not for your safety.

Every number we give includes parts, labor, base material, and disposal. We write the price on paper before any work starts, and the number on day one is the number on the final invoice. You get a 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing with the job. If the pavers shift, the substrate cracks, or the drainage fails inside that year, we come back and fix it at no charge. No service call fee, no re-inspection fee. That’s the Kingswell standard since 2004: say the price before the work, show up in the window we gave, leave the place cleaner than we found it.

DIY or Call Us?

For driveway and paver work, the safety concern isn’t springs or tension, it’s the base. You can check a few things yourself: look for standing water after rain, press a broom handle into the joints to feel for soft base, and check whether the edge restraint is still buried or has popped up. What you shouldn’t do is pull up pavers and guess at a repair. A shifting paver is almost never just a paver problem. It’s a base compaction problem, a drainage problem, or a substrate problem underneath. If you patch the surface without fixing what’s below, you’ll be looking at the same crack again before the rainy season ends.

And on the subject of HardieBacker under pavers: the panels are not dangerous to handle, but cutting and fastening them correctly under a load-bearing paver surface is detail work. Wrong fastener spacing, missing seam tape, no gap at the edges. Each one creates a failure point you won’t see until a paver cracks above it. Trevor Nash’s rule on this one is simple: give us the real problem and we’ll give you the real number. Call (669) 274-2362 and we’ll walk the driveway with you, show you what’s actually failing, and put a written price in your hand before we touch a single paver.
