Barrette Driveway & Pavers: The San Jose Owner’s Guide

If you have a Barrette driveway, walkway, or paver patio in San Jose and a section has cracked, settled, or pulled away, we stock and install Barrette-compatible replacement materials. For most San Jose homes, repairing or replacing a failed paver section runs $826 – $2,950 depending on the area involved, and full paver driveway installations start at $8,260. You’ll usually find the problem after a heavy rain when water pools where it didn’t before, or when a paver rocks underfoot and you notice the sand joint has washed out.

Here’s what most San Jose homeowners discover when they call us: the pavers themselves are often still in good shape. What failed is the base layer underneath, the material that holds everything level. Barrette pavers are concrete units with tight dimensional tolerances, which is great news for fit, but it means any movement in the base telegraphs straight to the surface. You see a paver cracked in half and assume the paver failed. Usually, the ground under it gave way first.

Which Barrette Models This Applies To

Barrette Outdoor Living produces paver and edging systems under several product lines, and the compatibility question matters more than most homeowners expect. The majority of Barrette pavers sold for San Jose driveways and patios come from their concrete paver and slab collections, which include square and rectangular units in 16″ x 16″, 12″ x 12″, and 24″ x 12″ formats. If you still have the original paperwork, look for the product code stamped on the pallet wrap or the receipt. If you don’t, measure the paver’s face dimensions and thickness. Barrette driveway pavers are typically 60mm thick (about 2-3/8″) for vehicle traffic, while patio-only units run thinner at 50mm. Using a patio paver where a car will drive over it is a common San Jose mistake we see, especially in older neighborhoods where a previous owner cut corners.

One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: Barrette has changed paver color batches over the years, and a paver bought in 2016 will not be a perfect color match to one produced in 2024. We keep current Barrette-compatible pavers on hand, but for older installations we may recommend a close-match aftermarket equivalent if the exact color has been discontinued. Aftermarket options from Belgard and Unilock often match dimensionally. The honest answer is that a two-toned patch looks worse than a clean full-section replacement, so we’ll always tell you which route makes sense before you spend a dollar.

We’re an independent San Jose contractor, not affiliated with Barrette, which means we can source whichever paver gives you the best fit and price rather than pushing one brand’s catalog.

Signs Your Barrette Driveway & Pavers Are Failing

  • Rocking or shifting pavers underfoot. This tells you the bedding sand has eroded or washed out beneath the paver. In San Jose’s clay-heavy soils, winter rain saturates the ground, and without proper edge restraint the outer pavers start to drift. Each rain cycle makes the movement worse.
  • Sand washing out of the joints after rain. Every paver system relies on joint sand to lock units together. When you see sand fanning across your driveway after a storm, the interlock is weakening. Left alone, the pavers will start to separate and crack at the edges.
  • A paver cracked clean through the middle. Concrete pavers rarely crack from surface wear. A clean split usually means the base settled unevenly underneath and the paver snapped across the void. Replacing the paver without fixing the base guarantees it cracks again within a season.
  • Low spots or standing water that weren’t there before. This is the earliest and most overlooked sign. Water pooling means the base has compacted unevenly. In San Jose, where we cycle between dry summers and wet winters, a small low spot becomes a bigger one every year.
  • Edges spreading outward or a border course separating from the field. The edge restraint, usually plastic or concrete, has failed or was never installed. Once the border goes, the rest of the driveway loses its structural lock and the whole system starts walking outward.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For San Jose homeowners, here’s what we quote, in writing, before any work starts:

  • Isolated paver replacement (1 – 10 pavers): $826 – $1,420. This covers removing the failed units, re-leveling the bedding sand, and installing new pavers with fresh joint sand.
  • Section repair (10 – 50 sq ft, including base rebuild): $1,420 – $2,950. We dig out the failed base, install new compacted aggregate, reset the pavers, and re-sand the joints.
  • Full paver driveway installation: $8,260 – $21,240. This is new construction over a properly engineered base, including edge restraint and polymeric sand.

The price driver is almost always what’s underneath. If the base is still solid, a repair is quick and affordable. If the base was never compacted properly, or if tree roots are involved, we’re rebuilding from the dirt up. Either way, you get a written number before we touch the job, and that number does not change unless you change the scope. Every repair we do in San Jose carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repaired section fails within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge, in writing on every project.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do two things yourself: sweep fresh joint sand into gaps that look thin, and keep an eye on whether water pools in the same spots after rain. Those are diagnostic, not repairs, and they help you tell us exactly what’s happening. Pulling up pavers and rebuilding a base is physically demanding work that requires a plate compactor, crushed aggregate, and an understanding of how San Jose’s clay soil behaves when it gets wet and dries out, which is different from, say, sandy coastal soil. If you get the base wrong, the pavers will look fine for six months and then fail in the first winter rain.

Trevor Nash has been running repair and construction projects across the South Bay for the better part of two decades, including finish work in San Jose’s Willow Glen neighborhood that he still considers some of his cleanest. His rule on paver work is simple: give me the real problem and I’ll give you the real number. Call (669) 274-2362 and describe what you’re seeing. We’ll tell you whether it’s a $10 bag of sand or a base rebuild before anyone schedules a visit.
