CertainTeed Kitchen Remodeling: The San Jose Owner’s Guide
If you have CertainTeed products in your kitchen and something’s failed or wearing out, we install and replace CertainTeed-compatible kitchen remodeling components throughout San Jose, typically between $16,520 and $53,100 depending on scope. Most owners discover the problem the way you probably did: a cabinet door that won’t stay shut, a countertop seam that’s opened up, or drywall cracking around a window that’s letting moisture in. Here’s what you need to know before you call anyone.
CertainTeed is primarily known for building materials: drywall, insulation, siding, and trim. When homeowners in San Jose talk about “CertainTeed kitchen remodeling,” they’re usually referring to kitchens built with CertainTeed gypsum board, CertainTeed M2Tech moisture-resistant drywall behind the sink and backsplash, or CertainTeed’s gypsum-based underlayment beneath the flooring. These materials are the hidden skeleton of your kitchen, and when they fail, the visible surfaces tell the story.
We’re an independent San Jose remodeling contractor, not affiliated with CertainTeed, but we work with these materials every week and know exactly how they behave in our climate.
Which CertainTeed Products This Applies To

CertainTeed makes dozens of gypsum and building products, but in San Jose kitchens, we mostly see failures tied to three specific products:
- CertainTeed M2Tech 1/2″ Moisture-Resistant Drywall: The green-faced board specified behind sinks, dishwashers, and backsplash tile. San Jose’s hard water means more splashing, more steam, and more cycles of wet-dry stress than drier climates. This board handles moisture better than standard drywall, but it’s not waterproof. A failed caulk joint at the countertop backsplash lets water wick behind the board, and six months later you’ve got mold and crumbling gypsum.
- CertainTeed Regular 1/2″ and 5/8″ Gypsum Board: Used on kitchen walls and ceilings. In San Jose’s older housing stock from the 1960s through the 1980s, we regularly find original drywall that’s sagging between ceiling joists or separating at taped seams. If your home is in Willow Glen, Rose Garden, or Evergreen and hasn’t been remodeled since the Reagan administration, this is probably what’s behind your paint.
- CertainTeed Gypsum Underlayment: Poured or board-form underlayment beneath tile, vinyl, or engineered wood kitchen floors. Failures here show up as cracked tiles, hollow-sounding spots when you tap the floor, or grout lines that keep re-cracking no matter how many times you regrout them.
How to identify what you have: the drywall in your kitchen has a printed label on the back side of the board, which you can see if you remove an outlet cover and look behind it with a flashlight, or during any demolition. Green or purple facing means moisture-resistant board. Standard white or gray facing means regular gypsum. If you’re unsure, take a photo and we’ll tell you what you’re looking at during a free estimate visit.
One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: if your kitchen was built or remodeled between roughly 2005 and 2015, you may have CertainTeed M2Tech board that’s actually not rated for ceiling spans beyond 16 inches on center. Some builders used it everywhere including ceilings, and we see sagging between 24-inch joist spacing more often than you’d think. The fix is proper 5/8″ board or additional blocking.

Signs Your CertainTeed Kitchen Is Failing
- Cracked grout lines that keep coming back: The tile isn’t the problem; the substrate behind it is moving. CertainTeed underlayment or drywall that’s absorbed moisture expands and contracts, and the grout is the first casualty.
- Soft spots or bulges under wall paint near the sink: Water has gotten behind the paint and into the gypsum. Push gently; if it gives or feels chalky, the board is compromised. You’re looking at a cut-out and patch at minimum.
- Mold staining at the base of cabinets or behind the dishwasher: M2Tech resists mold, but it doesn’t prevent it forever in a warm, wet cavity. By the time you see staining on the visible surface, the hidden side is significantly worse.
- Sagging ceiling drywall between joists: Look down the length of your kitchen ceiling from a corner. If it dips between light fixtures or you see nail pops in a line, the board has lost its structural grip and needs replacement, not just repair.
- Seam cracks at drywall joints, especially around doorways and window openings: San Jose’s clay soil expands and contracts with seasonal moisture, and older foundations shift. The drywall joints are where that movement shows up first. A single hairline crack is normal; cracks wider than about 1/16 inch or cracks that reopen after patching are a substrate issue.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

CertainTeed-related kitchen remodeling in San Jose runs $16,520 to $53,100 for a full kitchen depending on layout and finish level. A small kitchen remodel with stock cabinetry and laminate counters lands between $10,620 and $23,600. A countertop-only job with new substrate repair and Cambria or Silestone quartz runs $2,360 to $7,670. Backsplash installation with proper M2Tech repair behind it costs $945 to $2,950.
If the scope is more targeted, say replacing a section of failed drywall behind the sink and reinstalling the backsplash, expect to pay between $3,000 and $6,000 in the San Jose market. That includes demolition, new M2Tech board, taping and finishing, tile or substrate prep, and a written guarantee on every bit of it.
You’ll get a written price before we start. Not a verbal ballpark, not “we’ll see how it goes.” A number you can hold us to. If the price changes mid-job because we find something behind the wall, we stop, show you what we found, and give you a change order in writing before we pick up another tool.
Every job carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the repair fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That promise is in writing, not just on a business card.

DIY or Call Us?
You can absolutely check a few things yourself before calling anyone. Remove an outlet cover and look at the drywall edges. Feel the wall under the sink for softness. Tap the floor with your knuckle and listen for hollow spots that shouldn’t be there. Those observations will help you have an informed conversation with any contractor.
What I’d recommend against doing yourself is cutting out failed drywall behind cabinets or near any plumbing. There’s electrical in those walls. There are supply lines and drain pipes. Cut into the wrong spot and a $4,000 repair becomes an $8,000 repair plus an emergency plumber. If the failure involves moisture, there’s likely mold behind the surface, and you want someone who knows how to contain that properly, not someone with a box fan and a Shop-Vac.
Also relevant: pulling a permit. If the scope involves moving plumbing, electrical, or structural changes, San Jose requires a permit, and we pull it. We also schedule the inspections and stand behind what gets signed off.

FAQs

Properly installed and kept dry, CertainTeed gypsum board lasts 50 years or more, but kitchens are the exception. Constant humidity, water splashing, and the occasional plumbing leak mean the board behind your sink, dishwasher, and backsplash typically needs attention within 15 to 25 years in San Jose homes. The visible signs come faster if the original caulk and tile work was done poorly.
Small holes and surface damage can be patched, and a good drywall finisher can make it invisible. But if the gypsum core has absorbed water, crumbled, or sagged, replacement is the only correct fix. Patching over water-damaged drywall is how you end up with mold behind the patch and the same crack back in six months. Call (669) 274-2362 and we’ll tell you which category yours falls into, honestly.
A targeted repair like replacing the drywall behind a backsplash takes two to three days including drying time between mud coats. A full kitchen remodel runs three to eight weeks in San Jose depending on permit timing, cabinet lead times, and countertop fabrication. We give you a schedule in writing before we start, and we honor the arrival windows we set.
We don’t stock it on shelves; CertainTeed gypsum board is heavy and needs to stay dry, so we order it from local San Jose suppliers for delivery straight to your job site. That keeps the board fresh and undamaged. What we do bring on the truck: the tools, the fasteners, the tape and mud, and the experience to know exactly how CertainTeed board behaves in San Jose’s climate and housing stock.
Only if we find something behind the wall that we couldn’t see during the estimate, like rotted framing or a leak that’s been hiding. If that happens, we stop work and show you the problem. You’ll get a written change order with the new number, and you decide before we continue. No surprises at the invoice.
