Cover Windows & Doors: The San Jose Owner's Guide

Cover windows and doors are built on a proprietary aluminum extrusion system, and when a hinge pin shears, a roller delaminates, or the interlock strip cracks, the whole panel stops sliding the way it should. We stock and install Cover-compatible replacement parts for San Jose homes, with most hinge, roller, and seal swaps running between $180 and $560 installed, depending on the panel size and how many components need replacing. Most owners discover the failure the hard way: a door that suddenly drags, a window that won't latch, or a draft that wasn't there last winter. Penhallow Remodeling San Jose is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Cover. We just fix their systems correctly.

Which Cover Models This Applies To

Cover uses a few distinct hardware generations, and the part that fits one series often won't seat properly in another. The three series we see most in San Jose are the original Series 100 (single-pane, with exposed corner screws), the Series 200 (dual-pane, with a snap-in glazing bead), and the newer Series 300 (flush-mount handle, hidden fasteners). The fastest way to identify yours is to pull the operable panel out and look at the bottom corner of the frame, on the inside face. Cover stamps a two-digit series code there, usually next to the manufacturing date. If the stamp has worn off, measure the roller track width: Series 100 runs 5/8 inch, Series 200 runs 3/4 inch, and Series 300 runs 7/8 inch. That measurement alone eliminates most wrong-part orders.

For replacement parts, we specify OEM Cover components whenever the panel is still under warranty or the part is a structural hinge plate, because the OEM castings are slightly heavier than budget aftermarket equivalents. For wear items like rollers and weatherstrip, we often use quality aftermarket replacements from Prime-Line or Gordon – they cost 30 to 40 percent less, hold up the same five to seven years in our dry California climate, and they're what we'd put in our own homes. The one part we never substitute aftermarket is the interlock strip. That's the vertical seam where two panels meet. Aftermarket strips tend to shrink slightly in San Jose's hot summers, and a shrunk interlock means a draft you'll feel every winter night.

Signs Your Cover Windows & Doors Is Failing

  • The panel drags or catches halfway. Cover rollers are nylon-tired on steel bearings. After roughly eight to ten years, the nylon develops flat spots, and the panel starts to lurch instead of glide. The fix is new rollers, not lubrication – greasing a flat-spotted roller just makes a mess of the track.
  • The lock lever won't fully engage. Cover's multi-point lock throw is calibrated at 3mm. When the hinge blocks wear down even half a millimeter, the lever sits lower on the strike plate, and you have to lift or shove the panel to get it to latch. That's a hinge replacement, not a lock problem.
  • You feel a draft when the panel is closed. The interlock strip and the wool pile weatherseal are the two draft barriers on Cover systems. In San Jose's dry heat, both materials tend to compress and lose their rebound after about six or seven years. If you can see daylight through the seam, the weatherseal is long gone.
  • Condensation builds up between the glass panes. Dual-pane Cover panels have a thermal seal around the perimeter. Once that seal fails, moisture gets in and you'll see fogging that comes and goes with the temperature. The panel doesn't leak into the house; the glass unit just needs to be replaced.
  • The panel sits visibly lower on one side. This usually means a hinge block has cracked internally. Cover hinge blocks are cast zinc, and they fail gradually. You'll notice the door scrapes the threshold on the handle side first, because that's where the weight lands.

Replacement Cost & What's Included

For San Jose homeowners, a typical Cover roller replacement runs $180 to $320 per panel. Hinge block replacement runs $240 to $430 per panel. A full tune-up – new rollers, new weatherseal, hinge adjustment, and track cleaning – typically falls between $350 and $560 per door or window. What drives the range is panel weight: a sliding glass door panel needs four rollers, while a window panel needs two. And some San Jose homes have second-floor Cover windows that require a ladder and two techs, which adds labor.

Every job gets a written price before we start. That number includes the parts, the labor, the trip to your home, and disposal of the old components. You'll see it in writing before anything gets pulled. If a repair fails within 365 days, we come back and fix it at no charge – that's the Done Right Promise, and it's on paper with every Cover parts job we do.

DIY or Call Us?

An owner can safely do a few things before calling anyone. Clean the bottom track with a dry brush, check the rollers for visible flat spots, and look at the interlock strip for cracks. That's genuinely useful information, and it helps me diagnose over the phone. The dangerous part is pulling the panel. A sliding glass door panel weighs 90 to 160 pounds, and once it's out of the frame, it wants to fall forward. People get hurt every year trying to replace rollers without the right lift blocks. If the panel is second-story, or if you're not 100 percent sure how it unseats, the math is simple: a roller kit costs $30 online and an emergency room visit costs a lot more. Give me the real problem and I'll give you the real number. Call (669) 274-2362 and we'll tell you what's actually broken.
