IKO Driveway & Pavers: The San Jose Owner’s Guide
IKO driveway and paver replacement in San Jose typically runs $8,260 – $21,240 for a full paver driveway installation, depending on square footage, base depth, and paver line. We stock IKO-compatible pavers and matching edge restraints, and most driveway replacements are scheduled within one to two weeks in San Jose, not dragged out over a month. Homeowners usually discover a problem the same way: a paver sinks into a soft spot after winter rain, an edge row pushes out where the driveway meets the lawn, or a section of the surface starts shifting under the car tires. You notice it when you pull in at night and the headlights catch a low spot that wasn’t there last spring.
We’re an independent San Jose contractor, not an IKO dealer or affiliate. That means we match what you already have, source the right pavers from trade suppliers, and install them to hold up under San Jose’s wet winters and dry summers. The paver itself is rarely the failure point. It’s almost always what’s underneath.
Which IKO Models This Applies To

IKO manufactures several paver lines, and compatibility matters more than most homeowners expect. The two most common lines we encounter in San Jose driveways are IKO’s Cambridge-style interlocking pavers (sold in 6 cm and 8 cm thicknesses) and the larger-format slab pavers used for patios and driveway accents. If your driveway has pavers that lock together in a basket-weave or running-bond pattern, you’re likely dealing with the interlocking line. Larger rectangular units with wider joints point to the slab line.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha: a paver from IKO’s patio line is not a structural match for a driveway, even if the color looks identical. Driveway pavers need at least 6 cm of depth to handle vehicle weight. Patio pavers are often 4 cm or 5 cm. Laying thinner pavers on a driveway base is how you get cracks six months later, and we see this mistake left behind by previous contractors in Willow Glen and Almaden Valley more often than we’d like. The fix isn’t a patch. It’s removing the section, rebuilding the base, and relaying the correct thickness.
OEM IKO pavers and quality aftermarket equivalents (Belgard, Unilock) both work, but the color and joint spacing will never match perfectly across brands. If you’re replacing a full section, we can match the IKO paver exactly. If you’re extending a driveway or adding a walkway, we’ll show you samples side by side outdoors in full sun before you commit. Color looks different on a cloudy day than it does at noon.

Signs Your IKO Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- One or two pavers sinking in the middle of the driveway. This usually means the compacted base material underneath has settled or washed out. The paver isn’t bad; the support underneath it failed. In San Jose, this often traces back to poor drainage or a downspout pouring water directly under the driveway.
- Edge pavers pushing outward into the lawn or flower bed. The edge restraint (typically a plastic or concrete border strip) has let go. Without it, the whole field of pavers slowly walks sideways under vehicle weight. You’ll see a widening gap at the garage door first.
- Surface cracks running across multiple pavers in a straight line. Concrete pavers crack when the base shifts, not from wear. A straight-line crack usually means the subgrade below the base has a weak spot, often from a trench that was backfilled loosely or a tree root pushing up.
- Water pooling in one spot after rain. A properly installed paver driveway slopes away from the house at roughly a quarter-inch per foot. If you’re getting standing water, the slope has flattened or a low spot has developed. Standing water is what softens the base and starts the sinking cycle.
- Efflorescence, white chalky staining, or pavers flaking at the surface. Efflorescence is cosmetic and common in San Jose’s hard water; a proper cleaning and sealing handles it. Surface flaking or spalling, though, means the paver itself is failing, often from years of wet-dry cycles and no sealing. That’s a replacement job, not a cleaning job.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A paver driveway installation in San Jose runs $8,260 – $21,240, and the range comes down to three things: square footage, base condition, and paver line. A straight replacement of a small single-car driveway where the base is still solid lands at the lower end. A large driveway with a ruined base, drainage corrections, and premium pavers reaches the upper end.
Every quote we write includes the pavers, base material (we typically use 4 to 6 inches of compacted aggregate, which is what San Jose’s clay soil demands), sand bedding, edge restraints, haul-away of the old material, and labor. You get one written number before work starts. No change orders on day three because the base was worse than we thought. We check the base before we quote, so the price already reflects what’s under your driveway. Trevor Nash made that a rule years ago: figure it out before the tools come off the truck, not after.
| Scope | San Jose Installed Price |
|---|---|
| Paver Driveway Installation (full) | $8,260 – $21,240 |
| Driveway Replacement (remove and relay existing base) | $5,900 – $16,520 |
| Paver Patio Installation (adjacent to driveway) | $4,130 – $12,980 |
| Driveway Sealing (post-install protection) | $295 – $825 |
Every installation carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the pavers shift, sink, or crack inside that year, we return and fix it at no charge. That includes a free second visit if a repair fails. No service-call fee, no re-inspection charge. We name the guarantee because a driveway is the first thing you see every time you come home. It should be right.
DIY or Call Us?
There are things you can safely check yourself. Look at where your downspouts drain. If a downspout pours water next to the driveway edge, that’s the likely culprit for your sinking pavers, and redirecting it is a legitimate weekend fix for most homeowners. You can also check your edge restraints visually: if the plastic strip is visible and bent outward, you’ve found the failure. Knowing that helps you understand the quote.
Where DIY goes wrong is the base. Homeowners replace the sunken pavers on top, but they don’t fix the compacted base underneath, and the new pavers sink again by the next rainy season. You also need a plate compactor, which most people don’t own, and hand-tamping a driveway creates the exact soft spots you’re trying to eliminate. Improper tearing out also risks hitting irrigation lines or conduit that runs near the driveway. We’ve repaired basements of driveways where someone trenched through a sprinkler main and left it leaking into the base. If the pavers are moving, call us at (669) 274-2362 and we’ll tell you what we see. Trevor’s approach: give me the real problem and I’ll give you the real number.
FAQs

A properly installed IKO paver driveway in San Jose lasts 20 to 30 years for the pavers themselves, with the base under them needing attention around the 10 to 15 year mark. San Jose’s winter rain is the real enemy: water finds its way through the joints, softens the base, and starts the sinking cycle. Sealing every 3 to 5 years slows that down. Call (669) 274-2362 for a driveway evaluation and we’ll tell you how much life your base has left.
Yes, if the failure is localized. A small sunken section where a downspout overloaded the base can often be repaired by removing the affected pavers, rebuilding the compacted base in that area, and relaying the surface. If the edge restraints have failed around the entire perimeter or the whole driveway has shifted, a full replacement costs less in the long run than repeated patches. We’ll give you a straight answer on which one your driveway needs.
A typical San Jose paver driveway replacement takes 3 to 5 working days from tear-out to final compaction, depending on size and drainage work. You’ll have a written schedule before we start, and our background-checked technicians arrive in uniform at the time we said they would. The Kingswell Way means saying the price before the work and showing up in the window we gave.
We keep common IKO-compatible pavers and edge restraints on our trucks for repairs, but full driveway replacements are ordered to match your existing color and size. We also work with Belgard and Unilock products, as well as other brands we stock parts for, including KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone for the remodeling side of our business. Matching your existing pavers exactly is our first priority, and if we can’t get a perfect match, we’ll tell you before you sign anything.
