Kohler Bathroom Remodeling: The San Jose Owner’s Guide
Kohler bathroom remodeling in San Jose typically runs $10,620 to $33,040 for a full bathroom, and we stock or can source Kohler-compatible parts for most series still in production. If you’ve got a leaking fixture, a cracked valve body, or a wall that’s been quietly soaking up moisture behind a Kohler surround, we can usually diagnose it and hand you a written number in the same visit. Most San Jose homeowners discover the problem the way you probably just did: a drip that wouldn’t stop, a soft spot in the drywall near the tub flange, or a shower valve that’s gone stiff and won’t hold temperature.
We’re an independent remodeling company, not a Kohler-authorized service center. That matters less than you’d think, because the parts we install are genuine Kohler OEM or brand-name equivalents, and the work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing.
Which Kohler Models This Applies To

Kohler makes hundreds of fixture lines, but in San Jose bathrooms we mostly see a handful of workhorse series: Purist, Stillness, Bancroft, Devonshire, Memoirs, and the contractor-grade Forté line that went into a lot of early-2000s Silicon Valley tract homes. Each series has its own trim diameter, valve rough-in depth, and cartridge spec. A Purist handle will not swap onto a Bancroft valve body, even though both are “Kohler.”
The fastest way to identify your part is to look for the model number stamped into the metal on the underside of the spout, behind the escutcheon plate (the round trim plate against the wall), or on the original box if you kept it. Kohler also stamps a date code on many cast parts. If you can’t find it, measure the distance between the hot and cold inlets on the valve body: most Kohler pressure-balance valves are either 3-3/8″ or 3-5/8″ spread. We’ve seen more than one San Jose homeowner order the wrong cartridge online by guessing.
On the parts decision: for cartridges, valves, and anything that touches water under pressure, we recommend genuine Kohler OEM. The tolerances are tighter, and Kohler’s own warranty only applies when the OEM part is used. For trim kits, escutcheons, and drain assemblies, we stock quality brand equivalents from B&K, Danco, and Plumb Pak. They cost 30-50% less and hold up fine. Trevor Nash will tell you which matters on your specific job, and he’ll write the part numbers on the estimate so you can verify every line.

Signs Your Kohler Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Water won’t shut off completely, or the handle keeps turning past the stop point. The cartridge inside the valve body has worn seals or a cracked plastic stem. On Kohler Rite-Temp valves, this is usually the pressure-balancing unit, a $40-$90 part.
- The shower temperature swings wildly when someone flushes a toilet elsewhere in the house. The pressure-balancing spool inside the cartridge is jammed with hard-water scale. San Jose’s water is hard – we see this weekly in Almaden and Evergreen, where mineral buildup kills cartridges faster than in softer-water neighborhoods.
- Water seeps from behind the handle or around the trim plate, not from the spout. This is usually a failed O-ring or a cracked valve body bonnet nut. It leaks into the wall cavity, not the tub, so it rots the studs before you ever see water on the floor.
- The tub spout diverter stopped lifting or drops on its own mid-shower. The Kohler diverter gate has worn or clogged. On most Forté and Devonshire tub spouts, this is a $20-$40 pull-off replacement, but on wall-mounted diverters, the whole rough-in may be involved.
- Soft drywall, bubbling paint, or a musty smell near the tub or shower surround. This is the one that scares us. The leak is inside the wall and has probably been there for months. By the time you smell it, you usually need some degree of drywall and backer board replacement along with the plumbing fix – which is where the price moves from a parts swap into the full remodeling range.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the honest San Jose pricing, because you should know the number before anyone picks up a wrench:
- Cartridge or stem replacement (single fixture): $225-$520 installed, including the part, labor, and a written one-year parts-and-labor warranty.
- Valve body replacement (requires opening the wall): $950-$2,700, depending on whether we’re soldering copper or adapting PEX, plus drywall patch and paint match.
- Tub spout and trim kit replacement: $180-$410 installed, parts included.
- Full Kohler bathroom remodel in San Jose (tub/shower, flooring, vanity, toilet, fixtures): $10,620-$33,040. The spread depends on tile selection (ceramic vs. large-format porcelain vs. natural stone), whether we’re moving plumbing or keeping the same footprint, and whether the substrate behind the wall is still sound.
- Walk-in shower conversion with Kohler fixture package: $5,310-$14,160.
What drives the number up in San Jose specifically: older homes in Willow Glen and the Rose Garden often have galvanized steel supply lines that need replacing to meet code, and second-story bathrooms in Cambrian and Blossom Valley sometimes require drywall access from below. What keeps the number down: keeping the toilet and vanity where they are, and choosing a mid-range Kohler trim kit over a designer finish.
Every Kohler bathroom remodel we do in San Jose includes a written price before work starts, a written 365-Day Done Right Promise, and background-checked, uniformed technicians who arrive in the window we gave you. The number on the estimate is the number on the invoice.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely do this yourself: replace an exterior tub spout (it threads off); swap a showerhead or handshower; replace a visible toilet flapper or fill valve. These are hand-tight jobs that don’t put you inside the wall.
You should not DIY anything that involves opening the wall or soldering pipe. A Kohler valve body replacement means shutting down the water, cutting into the shower surround or drywall, and working with copper or PEX under pressure test. If the valve is in a shared wall with the neighboring bedroom, the cost of a wrong solder joint is a flooded floor and a mold problem inside two stud bays. We’ve fixed enough homeowner attempts in San Jose to say this plainly: the wall repair after a botched DIY valve job usually costs double what the plumber would have charged in the first place.
If you’re not sure which camp your problem falls into, call us at (669) 274-2362. We’ll talk you through what you’re seeing and tell you honestly whether it’s a hand-tight job or a wall-open job. No charge for the conversation.
FAQs

A well-maintained Kohler pressure-balance cartridge typically lasts 8-15 years in San Jose, but hard water in neighborhoods like Almaden, South San Jose, and Evergreen can cut that to 5-8 years if the cartridge is never flushed or cleaned. Sediment from older galvanized supply lines accelerates wear. If your household has a water softener, expect the longer end of that range. Call (669) 274-2362 if you’re not sure whether yours is wearing out early.
Some cartridge failures can be fixed with a seal kit ($15-$35 in parts) rather than a full cartridge replacement, but only if the cartridge body itself isn’t cracked. We’ll tell you which applies to your specific Kohler model after we pull the part and look at it. If it’s repairable, we repair it – we don’t sell you a replacement you don’t need. That’s the whole point of our written-price-before-work approach.
A full Kohler bathroom remodel in San Jose typically takes 2-4 weeks depending on scope, and a single cartridge or valve swap is a same-visit job we can usually complete in under two hours. Larger remodel timelines depend on tile curing time, whether permits are needed for plumbing changes, and inspector availability through the City of San Jose. We pull permits when the job requires them, and we pass inspections before we call the job done.
Our San Jose techs carry the most common Kohler Rite-Temp cartridges, Forté and Devonshire trim adapters, tub spout diverters, and O-ring kits on the truck, so many single-fixture jobs are done the same visit. Less common series like Purist or Stillness sometimes require a 1-3 day parts order. We’ll tell you exactly what we’re ordering and what it costs before we proceed. Call (669) 274-2362 with your Kohler model number and we’ll check stock while you’re on the phone.
