PGT Fence Installation: The San Jose Owner’s Guide

PGT fence installation in San Jose typically runs $4,130 – $10,620 for a full perimeter job, depending on linear footage, terrain, and whether we’re pulling out old material or starting fresh. If you’ve got a PGT product that’s already on site, or you want a fence system built around PGT components, we can usually match the hardware and get you scheduled within a week. Most owners we hear from discover the problem the hard way: a gate that won’t close square, posts leaning after winter rains, or panels cracking along stress points where the previous installer skipped reinforcement.

We’re an independent San Jose contractor, not a PGT dealer or factory service center. What that means for you is simple: we’re not pushing one product line. We match what you already have, price it honestly, and stand behind the install with a written guarantee. Trevor Nash has been running jobs like this across the South Bay for the better part of two decades, and he figures a homeowner who knows what’s happening is a homeowner who stays calm when surprises come up in the soil.

Which PGT Models This Applies To

A home office with a built-in desk and shelves

PGT is best known in California for impact-rated windows and doors, but their fencing division has put out a few distinct lines over the years, and not every part crosses between them. The three you’ll most likely run into in San Jose backyards are the PGT Vinyl Privacy Series, the PGT Aluminum Estate Series, and an older generation of PGT Classic Picket components that has been off the market since the early 2010s but still shows up in Willow Glen and Almaden Valley homes from that era.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha that trips up a lot of owners: PGT vinyl posts from the Privacy Series are a true 5×5 inch profile, but the wall thickness changed around 2016. Older panels will not seat properly in newer post extrusions without a shim kit, and vice versa. If you’re holding a section of rail and trying to match it, measure the inside channel width. If it’s 1.5 inches, you have current-generation stock. If it’s 1.25 inches, you need the older profile, and we can usually source it as a closeout or reproduction rather than forcing a current part.

OEM PGT parts carry a factory warranty, but lead times from the manufacturer can stretch three to six weeks. For most San Jose fence repairs, we use OEM when the warranty matters to you, and quality aftermarket equivalents when the piece is cosmetic or the factory part is backordered. Either way, you’ll know which one you’re getting before we order it, and you’ll know the price difference in writing.

Signs Your PGT Fence Installation Is Failing

  • Gates that drag or refuse to latch. In San Jose’s clay-heavy soil, post footings heave with winter moisture and settle in summer. A gate that worked in August and drags by January isn’t a hinge problem; it’s a post movement problem. The fix is resetting the post deeper, sometimes with a concrete collar.
  • Vinyl panels cracking at the rail pockets. PGT panels are machined to lock into routed rail slots. When the original installer forced a panel into an out-of-square section, stress concentrates at the corners. We see hairline cracks there first, then full fracture on hot days when the vinyl expands.
  • Aluminum rails pulling loose from the post brackets. The PGT Aluminum Estate Series uses a bracket-and-set-screw system. Over time, wind vibration works the screws loose, and the rail starts sagging. A sagging rail is a sign that the bracket is about to fail at the fastener holes.
  • White chalky residue on vinyl surfaces. That’s UV oxidation, and it’s normal after five to seven years in California sun. It doesn’t mean the fence is structurally done, but it does mean the surface has degraded enough that any repair weld will be visible. Good time to talk about full-section replacement instead of patching.
  • Posts leaning at the fence line, but not at the corners. This usually means the original installer set line posts in shallow concrete plugs instead of proper footings. San Jose code for residential fence footings calls for a minimum depth, and a lot of quick-turn crews cut that corner. Leaning line posts get worse fast.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

An open living space after a whole-home remodel

Full PGT-compatible fence installation in San Jose runs $4,130 – $10,620 for most residential lots. At the low end, you’re looking at a straightforward vinyl privacy perimeter, level ground, about 120 linear feet, minimal tear-out. At the top end, you’re dealing with a larger lot, aluminum estate panels, gate fabrication, significant old fence removal, or soil that needs deeper footings because of San Jose’s expansive clay.

Every estimate includes line-item parts, labor, footing work, hardware, and debris haul-off. You’ll get a written price before any work starts, and that number doesn’t change unless we open up the ground and find something structural that nobody could have seen from the surface. If that happens, we stop, explain it, and get your approval in writing before spending another dollar. The install carries a 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge, with no service call fee and no re-inspection fee.

Scope Typical Range What Moves the Price
Section repair (under 20 linear feet) $470 – $2,125 Post condition, panel availability
Partial replacement (20 – 60 linear feet) $1,400 – $3,500 Footing work, tear-out, access
Full vinyl perimeter install $4,130 – $8,850 Terrain, gate count, old fence removal
Full aluminum estate install $4,720 – $10,620 Gate fabrication, post spacing, finish grade

DIY or Call Us?

A homeowner can safely handle a few things on a PGT fence: tightening set screws, inspecting post bases for erosion, cleaning the rails, noting where panels have drifted from expansion. If you want to snap photos and measurements and send them our way before committing to anything, that’s a good step, and we’ll give you a straight read on what you’re looking at.

Where DIY goes wrong is footings and re-setting posts. San Jose soil expands and contracts seasonally, and a post set at the wrong depth, with the wrong concrete mix, will lean again within two years. It’s not unusual for us to pull out a homeowner-set post and find a 12-inch hole and a bag of quick-set. Then we’re charging you for the fix, plus the original materials, plus the time. If you’re going to reset a post, you need the hole below the frost-disturbance zone and enough concrete to anchor it. Most homeowners don’t have the auger for that, and that’s fine. That’s what we’re here for. Call (669) 274-2362 and we’ll schedule a free estimate.
