Sterling Kitchen Remodeling: The San Jose Owner’s Guide
If you have a Sterling kitchen and a cabinet door that no longer closes square, a sink rim that’s begun to pit, or a countertop seam that’s opened up, we can match the replacement parts to your exact model and install them for a typical completed cost of $16,520 to $53,100 depending on scope. Most Sterling-specific trim kits, hinges, and sink accessories are in stock at our San Jose shop or arrive within three business days. Homeowners usually discover the problem the way you just did: something that worked fine for years suddenly looks off, and now you’re trying to figure out whether you need a new hinge, a new door, or a whole new kitchen.
We’re Penhallow Remodeling San Jose, an independent remodeling contractor. We are not affiliated with Sterling or its parent company, but we work with Sterling products every week because they’re common in San Jose homes built from the 1990s onward. Trevor Nash, our owner, cut his teeth on kitchen and bath gut-jobs in Willow Glen and still talks about those Sterling sink installations as some of his cleanest finish work.
Which Sterling Models This Applies To

Sterling, a Kohler company, made kitchen sinks, faucets, and a line of kitchen cabinetry that shows up throughout San Jose’s older subdivisions, from Cambrian Park to Berryessa. If your kitchen has a Sterling sink, look underneath the front bowl lip for a stamped model number that begins with a letter followed by four digits, something like K-5942 or V-2330. That stamp tells us the exact faucet hole count and bowl depth, and it matters more than the year of the house.
The common compatibility gotcha: Sterling changed its sink mounting flange dimensions in the mid-2000s. A replacement trim kit from the current catalog will not drop into a pre-2005 Sterling sink without a small countertop cut. We check that before ordering anything. For cabinets, Sterling’s door hinge bore pattern is 35mm, same as KraftMaid and most European-style lines we also stock parts for, including Cambria and Silestone edge profiles for countertops. When an OEM Sterling hinge is backordered, a Blum or Salice hinge at the same bore spacing works, but we’ll tell you the brand we’re using before we install it.

Signs Your Sterling Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Cabinet doors that won’t stay closed or hang crooked. The self-closing spring inside the hinge has worn out, or the screw holes in the particleboard stile have stripped. The fix is usually a hinge swap and a toothpick-and-wood-glue repair, not a new cabinet.
- A sink rim that’s pitted or corroded around the faucet holes. Older Sterling stainless sinks used a thinner 20-gauge steel than the current 18-gauge standard, and hard San Jose water accelerates the pitting. The sink still works, but the rim is the failure point, not the bowl.
- Water staining on the cabinet floor under the sink. The Sterling sink’s foam gasket has decompressed after years of temperature swings, or the mounting clips have loosened. This is a pull-the-sink-and-reseal job, not a leak in the plumbing.
- A laminate countertop seam that’s lifted or darkened. Moisture has gotten under the laminate at the seam, and the particleboard core is swelling. In San Jose’s wet winters and dry summers, that cycle makes the problem worse by the month.
- A cabinet drawer that slides out too far and drops. The nylon roller on the original Sterling drawer guide has flattened on one side. A replacement guide set matches the original mounting holes and takes about twenty minutes per drawer.

You get a written price before any work starts, not a verbal range. The number on day one is the number on the invoice. Every job includes our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair or installation fails inside a year, we come back and make it right at no charge. We also include a written guarantee on every repair, and if a fix fails, the second visit is free, no service call fee.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely tighten a loose cabinet hinge, clean mineral deposits off a Sterling faucet aerator, or check the sink model number stamped under the bowl lip. Replacing a hinge is straightforward with a screwdriver. What you should not do is pull a Sterling undermount sink by yourself. Undermount sinks are held in place by adhesive and mechanical clips under the countertop, and if you release the wrong clip first, the sink can drop and crack the countertop or injure you. That’s a two-person job with the counter supported, and it’s why we send two techs for any sink removal.
If you’re not sure whether your issue is a hinge, a gasket, or something structural, call us at (669) 274-2362. Trevor’s rule is simple: give us the real problem and we’ll give you the real number. Tell us what the sink or cabinet is doing, and we’ll tell you over the phone whether it’s a parts replacement or a bigger remodel.
FAQs

A Sterling stainless sink typically lasts 18 to 25 years in San Jose, but the rim and mounting gasket usually need attention by year 15. The stainless itself rarely fails, but hard water pitting and gasket compression are the two things that call for a reseal or replacement.
In most cases, we replace the hinge rather than repair it. A worn self-closing mechanism inside the hinge can’t be rebuilt, and a replacement hinge costs less than the labor to attempt a repair. If the screw holes in the cabinet are stripped, we fill and redrill them in the same visit.
A full sink pull-and-reseal takes about half a day with two techs. Cabinet hinge replacement runs two to three hours for a standard kitchen with 12 to 15 doors. If the job needs a new countertop cut for a mismatched sink flange, add a day for fabrication.
We stock common Sterling hinge sets, drawer guides, gaskets, and mounting clips on our trucks. Odd-size trim kits and specialty sink models usually arrive in three business days. For cabinet lines we don’t stock directly, we source KraftMaid and Wellborn components that match the bore spacing and finish. Call (669) 274-2362 with your model number and we’ll confirm what’s on hand before you book the visit.
